Is it true that oral contraceptives can only be started during menstruation?

Patient's question:

I started my period on the 12th and it ended on the same day. The issue is that I bought Mifeprex for the first time today and only realized from the instructions that I need to wait until the first day of my period to start taking it. Does this mean I have to wait until the 10th or so of December to start taking it??? Additional question: The dates mentioned above are incorrect. I started my period on the 14th of December, so do I have to wait until the next month (January 13th) when my period comes again before I can start taking it?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, each Mifeprex package contains 21 white tablets. Each tablet on the back of the packaging panel is marked with the corresponding week number for each cycle. Take the medication according to the following rules: take the medication at the same time every day, swallow the whole tablet with a small amount of water. If you find it more convenient to chew, you may also chew it before taking it.
If you are currently not taking oral contraceptives
1. Please wait until the next menstrual cycle begins and take your first Mifeprex on the first day of this cycle (the first day of menstruation). Start from the date marked on the top row of the package. For example, if it starts on Wednesday, take the tablet marked with Wednesday on the top row and continue taking one tablet each day in the direction of the arrow until the entire package is finished. Each package contains 21 days of medication. If you can remember to take your first Mifeprex on the first day of your menstrual cycle and not forget any other days, you do not need to take any other contraceptive measures.
2. If your menstrual cycle has already occurred within the past 5 days, count the first day of your cycle as the first day, regardless of whether the menstrual bleeding has stopped, and take the first tablet on the 5th day. Continue taking the medication in the direction of the arrow until the entire package is finished (as described in the first item). However, your partner must use other contraceptive measures, such as condoms, for the first 14 days of your medication.
3. If your menstrual cycle has already occurred more than 5 days ago, please take other contraceptive measures and wait until the first day of your next menstrual cycle to start taking Mifeprex. When switching from taking other contraceptives to taking Mifeprex, consult your doctor.
