Patient's question:
Hello Doctor! Yesterday I went to the hospital for an ultrasound. I am 15+5 weeks pregnant, and the results showed a Grade 0 placenta. I'm not sure if it's normal. The doctor said it is normal, but I see that some sources say the placenta is only divided into Grades 1, 2, and 3. Thank you for your reply!Doctor's answer:
The maturity of the placenta is divided into four stages: Stage 0, Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3. Stage 1 indicates that the placenta is basically mature; Stage 2 late indicates placental maturity; Stage 3 late indicates that the placenta has aged. Due to calcification and fibrin deposition, the ability of the placenta to transport oxygen and nutrients is reduced, posing a risk to the fetus.Everyone's situation is different. Placenta:
- Second trimester of pregnancy (12–28 weeks) — Stage 0 placenta;
- Late pregnancy (30–32 weeks) — Stage 1 placenta;
- After 36 weeks — Stage 2 placenta (relatively mature).
If Stage 3 placenta is detected before 37 weeks, combined with the biparietal diameter value and an estimated fetal weight of 2500 grams, it should be considered as premature placenta, and caution should be taken regarding the possibility of intrauterine growth restriction. At 38 weeks, the placenta enters Stage 3, indicating placental maturity.
