Is it normal to have pain during pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Hello! I had my period on November 15th, and it's now the 27th, but I haven't gotten it yet. I've been having occasional lower abdominal pain, similar to the kind before my period, but it comes and goes. Before this, my periods were very regular, usually delayed by about 5 days. I want to ask if it's possible I could be pregnant now? If I am, is this pain normal? (I've used a pregnancy test, and although it showed two lines, the second line was very faint.)

Doctor's answer:

Pain in the abdomen during the early stages of pregnancy is not uncommon. This could be a normal physiological phenomenon caused by pregnancy, commonly referred to as cramp-like abdominal pain. It is primarily caused by the expansion of the uterus and the stretching of the round ligaments. However, if you frequently experience abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy, it is important to be cautious. It could be a sign of certain medical conditions, and pregnant women should seek immediate medical attention for diagnosis and appropriate treatment. But if you frequently have abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy, and you also experience symptoms such as spotting, bleeding, fever, chills, vaginal discharge, tenderness, and pain during the cramp-like abdominal pain, or if the pain does not subside even after resting for a few minutes, it is recommended that you go to the hospital for a consultation promptly.
