SIPRI Yearbook 2004: Armaments. Disarmament and International Security

Publish Date: 2005-05-01
Features: The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) now presents the 35th volume of the SIPRI Yearbook. It reflects the institute's traditional continuity in documentary analysis work while narrating and commenting on new developments in political and institutional security, arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament in its chapters. This volume of the yearbook aims to address broader issues, not only those directly related to the Iraq issue. As before, some chapters have been included because they provide deeper insights into currently less-attention-grabbing issues, or better reflect perspectives from different regions and traditions, or both. Specific examples include Bates Gill's chapter on China and the Asia-Pacific region, Uri Avnery's analysis based on Middle Eastern military spending (not just for weapons of mass destruction), and the preliminary research by young Kenyan researcher James Suo Enjugu on the lessons from the potential use of biological weapons following the SARS outbreak.
