Can you eat spicy food after pregnancy?

Patient's question:

My wife is 50 days pregnant. Her workplace has a lot of people from other places, so the food she eats is spicy. Can she eat spicy food now! What should she pay attention to?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: It is okay to eat appropriately, and there is no problem. Moreover, some pregnant women naturally have a strong preference for spicy foods.
(1) Early Pregnancy: During this stage, pregnant women often experience "morning sickness," leading to reduced appetite and symptoms like vomiting. At this point, embryonic development is relatively slow, so the need for nutrients such as calories, protein, and inorganic salts does not increase significantly. The nutritional requirements are basically the same as before pregnancy. The primary focus should be on boosting appetite by selecting light, refreshing, and hydrating foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, to regulate digestive function changes. If food preferences change, there is no need to avoid them. Choose foods rich in B vitamins, such as animal organs and nuts, to alleviate vomiting. At the same time, make sure to consume a certain amount of staple foods to prevent weight loss.
(2) Middle Pregnancy: During this stage, morning sickness has subsided, appetite improves, and the fetus grows and develops rapidly. The pregnant woman's body shape also begins to change. This period requires sufficient calories, protein, lipids, inorganic salts, and vitamins. If there is a lack of calories, protein, and lipids, it may affect the development of the fetal brain tissue. The fetus needs a large amount of calcium during this period, and the demand for iron also increases significantly. High-quality protein sources such as beans and bean products, animal organs, lean meat, dairy products, fish, and eggs should be emphasized. To supplement vitamins, choose animal organs, lean meat, fresh vegetables, and fruits.
(3) Late Pregnancy: During this stage, the fetus continues to mature and grow rapidly. If the pregnant woman's activity level decreases significantly, the caloric intake can be adjusted accordingly or maintained at the level of the middle pregnancy period. The supply of protein should be increased appropriately to meet the later stages of fetal development's needs for various nutrients.
