Is facial hyperpigmentation a sign of declining estrogen?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, I am 31 years old this year. Six months ago, I had an ovarian cyst surgery and had it removed (the ovaries are intact), but since then, I have noticed an increase in facial pigmentation and deeper wrinkles at the corners of my eyes. It seems like I am aging very quickly. Could this be a sign of declining estrogen levels in my body?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: Your condition is caused by symptoms of endocrine disorder. Conventional treatment methods are difficult to completely remove it. If the treatment is too superficial, it will not eliminate the damage. To achieve the ideal treatment depth, it is inevitable to leave scars. External medication is usually ineffective and generally only serves a placebo effect. Some people mistakenly believe that freckles are caused by endocrine disorder, so they use internal medication to treat them. In fact, freckles have nothing to do with endocrine disorders, and regulating the endocrine system will not have any therapeutic effect.
Medication application (medication cauterization), chemical peeling (beauty salons), high-frequency electricity, and ordinary carbon dioxide laser treatments are highly risky, very likely to leave scars, and have unsatisfactory efficacy. Therefore, please do not choose any of these treatment methods.
In comparison, cryotherapy is a relatively satisfactory treatment method. Although its efficacy and safety are not entirely satisfactory, compared to the methods mentioned above, this treatment is still usable, especially because the cost is relatively low. The most ideal treatment method is high-tech Q-switched laser therapy, which has high efficacy and safety but is relatively expensive.
In fact, there are currently two relatively certain treatment methods for freckles: cryotherapy and high-tech Q-switched laser therapy. Therefore, it is recommended that if you have financial constraints, you can opt for cryotherapy. If your financial situation is better, you can choose high-tech Q-switched laser therapy as the primary method to eliminate freckles on your face.
Of course, photofacial is also an ideal treatment method. Its biggest advantage is that it not only treats freckles but also makes the skin smooth and brightens it. After treatment, it generally does not affect work or school. Usually, you can return to normal work or school in the afternoon after treatment in the morning.
