How long after taking birth control pills can you have a child?

Patient's question:

On August 19th, I had an abortion without anesthesia. On October 19th, when my period started, I began taking birth control pills. It lasted for 6 days, then stopped for 3 days, and then came back for another 6 days. I went to the hospital for a check-up, and they said it was due to the birth control pills. After stopping the pills, I started taking traditional Chinese medicine to regulate my body, but then I stopped. I want to ask when my next period should be? It hasn’t come yet. Could I be pregnant again? This month, I used condoms for contraception, but my husband started using them only when he came home. Could I still get pregnant like this? If I am pregnant, is it okay if I want to keep it?

Doctor's answer:

Taking emergency contraception is recommended to wait for 6 months before getting pregnant. For the sake of healthy reproduction, it is safer to wait for 6 months after stopping the medication before becoming pregnant.
One to three months after stopping the medication, the body can resume ovulation. Therefore, it is necessary to immediately switch to another form of contraception after stopping the medication to avoid potential effects of the emergency pill on the fetus, which may cause certain psychological burdens.
If pregnancy occurs within 6 months of stopping the medication, there is no need to panic. You should proactively visit a hospital, explain the details to a gynecologist, and receive proper medical guidance for this pregnancy.
If vaginal bleeding or other symptoms appear in the early stages of pregnancy, it may be related to chromosomal abnormalities. In such cases, there is no need to force "maintaining the pregnancy," as miscarriage may be a natural elimination of an abnormal embryo.
If the pregnancy progresses normally, close monitoring can be conducted. If necessary, chromosomal, amniotic fluid, or ultrasound tests may be performed. If the test results are normal, the pregnancy can continue with enhanced prenatal care. If the test results are abnormal, termination of pregnancy may be considered.
