Features: The "Ten Tong" (or "Shi Tong") refers to the collective name of ten books with the character "Tong" in their titles. After Du You of the Tang Dynasty compiled the Tong Dian (Comprehensive Records), Zheng Qiao of the Southern Song Dynasty wrote the Tong Zhi (Comprehensive Annals), and Ma Duanlin of the early Yuan Dynasty compiled the Wen Xian Tong Kao (Comprehensive Examination of Literature and Documents). These three are collectively known as the "Three Tong" (San Tong). During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, the imperial court compiled the Xu Tong Dian (Continuation of Comprehensive Records), Qing Chao Tong Dian (Comprehensive Records of the Qing Dynasty), Xu Tong Zhi (Continuation of Comprehensive Annals), Qing Chao Tong Zhi (Comprehensive Annals of the Qing Dynasty), Xu Wen Xian Tong Kao (Continuation of Comprehensive Examination of Literature and Documents), and Qing Chao Wen Xian Tong Kao (Comprehensive Examination of Literature and Documents of the Qing Dynasty). Adding these six to the original "Three Tong," the collective name becomes the "Nine Tong" (Jiu Tong).
