Editing Guidelines:
1. The editing first transcribes the original manuscript of the collation notes, and then performs verification.
2. During transcription, the definitive version of the collation notes is primarily used, supplemented by reference materials.
3. During transcription, the page and line numbers of the collation notes are generally used, filled clearly and accurately. If there are errors in the original collation notes, they must be corrected one by one. Annotations marked with "" under the word "" are required, while the main text does not add "". If the original collation notes add "" without "", they must be corrected to maintain consistency.
4. The original manuscript of the collation notes primarily uses the Dian edition to collate the old Song and Yuan editions (the quoted sentences in the top are from the old Song and Yuan editions, and the variant readings in the bottom are from the Dian edition). Occasionally, the old Song and Yuan editions are used to collate the Dian edition (the quoted sentences in the top are from the Dian edition, and the variant readings in the bottom are from the old Song and Yuan editions). The collation of the old Song and Yuan editions against the Dian edition is the general rule, and it must be uniformly used to collate the Dian edition against the old Song and Yuan editions. During transcription, first locate the original text according to the page and line numbers of the Dian edition, then verify it against the collation notes and correct the page and line numbers in the collation notes, and reverse the quoted sentences and variant readings.
5. The reference editions used in the collation notes are generally filled in with a smaller font size, and versions are generally abbreviated. For example, the Jigu Ge edition is referred to as "Ji", the Bejian edition as "Be", the Dade edition as "De", the Wang Wensheng edition as "Wang", and the Kong Jihan edition as "Kong". Those filled in the top are the same as the collation notes, and those filled in the bottom are the same as the Dian edition. In the original manuscript, "Ji, De same" or "Be, Wang same", the word "same" can be omitted.
6. During the transcription of the collation notes, "o" is added to the side of variant readings and supplementary texts as a mark, "oo" for inverted texts, and "<" for missing texts. If there are any that should have been added but were omitted in the original manuscript, they must be supplemented.
7. During the transcription of the quoted sentences and variant readings in the collation notes, each item must be verified against the collation notes and the Dian edition. If errors or inversions are found in the original manuscript's quoted sentences and variant readings, they must be corrected one by one. If discrepancies are found in the collation notes or the Dian edition but were not marked in the collation notes, they must be transcribed on a separate sheet as supplementary notes to the collation notes and attached at the end.
8. The collation notes originally contained red and black ink annotations. All annotations related to the examination of variant readings are transcribed one by one in the notes. Annotations of different levels are separated by "○". The collation notes annotations were made by Zhang Julu, Wang Zhonggu, and Jiang Zhongfei. Since the collation notes were compiled by Julu, the names of the annotators are no longer marked. Special cases are handled separately. Annotations such as "SongDian", "DianSong", or "Meaning can be interpreted in two ways" must be transcribed as they are. In the Song and Yuan editions and the Dian editions, "×" is used to indicate the correctness or incorrectness of variant readings. During transcription, "Song is correct", "Song is incorrect", "Dian is correct", "Dian is incorrect", or "Dian is suspected to be incorrect" are used. If there are doubts about the quoted books in the annotations that cannot be clarified, the original book must be verified before transcription.
9. The collation notes outside is marked with "" or "" (occasionally marked with ""), all of which must be transcribed in the notes. During transcription, it must be verified according to the quoted sentences and variant readings to determine whether the collation notes have been revised, supplemented, or deleted. If there are any that should have been revised but were omitted, add a note "original annotation revised, omitted revision" in the notes. If there are any that were not originally marked as revised but were actually revised, they must also be noted. If the collation notes outside originally marked "omitted revision" or "incorrect revision", add notes "original annotation omitted revision", "original annotation incorrect revision" in the notes. If the collation notes originally had "omitted revision word list" or "incorrect revision word list", in addition to verifying and adding notes, a copy of the original list must be transcribed and attached at the end of the collation notes.
10. After the transcription of the collation notes is completed, it must be verified and corrected item by item. The number of corrections, revisions, omitted revisions, incorrect revisions, and revisions not marked but actually made must be counted, and a summary of the editing must be written.
Collation Notes of the Records of the Grand Historian:
1. The "Records of the Grand Historian" are handwritten by Mr. Zhang Jusheng and consist of six volumes. The red-lined paper was specially printed at the time. From top to bottom, they are arranged in the order of volume, leaf, line, Song edition, and Dian edition. They are transcribed in the same format.
2. The cover of the first volume and the last ten leaves of the sixth volume are supplementary notes, which are now interspersed in the collation notes.
3. The base edition used for the "Records of the Grand Historian" is the three-commentary edition printed by Huang Shanfu in Jian'an, Southern Song Dynasty, and the collation edition is the three-commentary edition printed by the Wuying Hall in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The former is abbreviated as "Song", and the latter as "Dian". The reference editions include the hundred-patch edition preserved by Liu Xihai in the Qing Dynasty, the single Solitary Hidden edition printed by Mao in the late Ming Dynasty, the three-commentary edition printed by Wang Yanzhe in the Ming Dynasty, and the recent Shu-Dian large-character edition printed by Liu Chenggan. They are successively abbreviated as "Nuò", "Ji", "Wang", and "Liu".
4. The format of the original manuscript of the collation notes first quotes the original sentences in the Song edition and adds marks for variant readings, supplementary texts, or missing texts. Then, the variant readings are marked in the Dian edition. The variant readings of the Wang edition are filled in the lower part of the Song and Dian editions, while the Nuò, Ji, and Liu editions are separately noted in the Song and Dian editions. Now, the variant readings of the Wang edition are moved to the Song and Dian editions, and the rest are kept in the original format.
5. The original manuscript has annotations by Julu in the top and bottom and between the lines. All annotations related to variant readings are transcribed into the "notes". Annotations with more than one item are separated by "○" in order of priority.
6. The original collation notes outside the lower have handwritten annotations by Julu such as "", "", or "". The printed edition of the "Hundred-Patch Edition of the Records of the Grand Historian" has already been revised, and the style of the revised text is consistent with that of Huang Shanfu's edition, so it is not easily noticeable. However, there are occasionally annotations marked with "" but not actually revised, and annotations not marked with "" but actually revised. All must be noted in the notes.
7. The original collation notes have occasional errors in the quoted sentences of the Song edition, which are now directly corrected according to the printed edition.
8. The original collation notes have errors in the quoted sentences of the Song edition and the variant readings of the Dian edition. That is, the quoted sentences in the Song edition are actually from the Dian edition, and the variant readings in the Dian edition are actually from the Song edition. They are separately noted in the notes, and the collation notes are not changed.
9. The original collation notes contain over 4,900 corrections, and 1,800 are marked with "", "", or "". However, there are some that have been revised in the printed edition but not marked in the original collation notes. Now, Du Zesong has compiled a supplementary volume based on the "Supplementary Notes to the Records of the Grand Historian" by Mizawa Toshitada, with 226 items, which is attached at the end for reference.
10. The original collation notes are in running script, with very fine interlinear characters that are extremely difficult to identify. Errors in transcription are inevitable, and we sincerely hope that readers will point them out.
