How to deal with heavy menstrual bleeding and abdominal pain

Patient's question:

I just had an abortion and cervical erosion surgery at the end of November. My period arrived yesterday, and in the meantime, I went to the hospital to change my medication. My periods used to be different like this. This time, I have stomach pain, and the blood flow is especially heavy. I want to ask what might be causing this and if it's normal. How should I treat it or take care of myself?

Doctor's answer:

Irregular menstruation has many causes, which are typically classified into two major categories in clinical practice: one is functional, such as menstrual irregularity caused by endocrine dysfunction; the other is organic, such as conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and endometriosis, which can also lead to menstrual irregularity.
Go to the hospital for a check-up and take medication as prescribed. In the meantime, eat more foods that boost qi and blood, or try traditional Chinese medicine for regulating menstruation, such as angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), astragalus (Huang Qi), and motherwort (Yi Mu Cao). Drink plenty of water, reduce the intake of spicy and irritating foods, pay attention to a balanced diet, and exercise more.
Wishing you good health.
