Features: Reformers must recognize that there are things more important than money, things more appealing than official positions, and things more valuable than life—that is, ideals! To live for ideals and beliefs is like growing in sunlight and rain, and it will surely lead to deep roots, lush leaves, and abundant fruits!—Lü Rizhou
Lü Rizhou said at Peking University: Reformers should not fear hardships; they should not fear being taken advantage of, nor should they fear isolation.
Lü Rizhou said at Tsinghua University: The official world is like a grinding stone: if you are a ball, you will become smoother; if you are a sword, you will become sharper. The official world is like a pond: if you are a lotus, you will rise unstained from the mud; if you are weeds, you will rot in the mud. The official world is like a grassland: if you are a bee, you will fly toward flowers; if you are a fly, you will seek dung heaps. The official world is like a field: if you are an ox, you will toil in the sunlight; if you are a gerbil, you will stir in dark holes.
