Features: This book is divided into two parts. The first part is Reading Vocabulary. Chapter 1 focuses on core vocabulary. Core vocabulary, as the name suggests, is important vocabulary for exams. These words are generally complex in form, varied in part of speech, and abstract in meaning. In reading, they often appear as follows: when you see a word in a text, you suddenly can't figure out its specific meaning in the sentence. The way we have learned English since childhood is "memorizing" words—memorizing the spelling and Chinese definition of a word, then translating the word into Chinese vocabulary first, and then linking the Chinese vocabulary into a sentence, finally understanding the meaning of the sentence based on the linked Chinese. This approach is very easy to get stuck on. One reason is that you discover some words you don’t recognize and cannot link the Chinese vocabulary into a sentence; the other reason is that you recognize the word, but it seems that the meaning you remember doesn’t make sense when linked into Chinese. Therefore, for the words in this chapter, you must spend more time carefully pondering their forms and meanings, imagining the possible meanings of these words when they appear in texts. For example, "deposit" in a financial context has the verb meaning "to save" and the noun meaning "payment"; in a business circulation context, the verb meaning is "to store (materials, etc.), to deposit (luggage, items, etc.)" and the noun meaning is "deposit or earnest money"; and in an earth geology context, the verb meaning is "to precipitate or deposit" and the noun meaning is "deposition, ore deposit, mineral deposit, etc." Therefore, for the words in this chapter, readers must take them seriously. The deeper you understand these core words, the faster your reaction will be in reading, and the more accurately you will understand the text. To help everyone grasp and deeply understand the vocabulary in this chapter, the editor has added synonyms to each sense of the words. Chapter 2 focuses on basic vocabulary. The words listed in this chapter are all below the level of the College English Test Band 4. For these words, it is important to pay attention to the extension or the uncommon meanings of familiar words. Pay special attention when doing English-Chinese translation, such as the words mentioned earlier, "tip" and "minutes." For these words, pay more attention during review and accumulate them. Chapter 3 focuses on out-of-range vocabulary. The selection criteria for the words are: first, common out-of-range words in past exam papers; second, high-frequency words used in contemporary British and American newspapers, magazines, films, and online media, totaling 557. The second part is Writing Vocabulary. The writing process is essentially about establishing the theme and structure, as well as selecting words and constructing sentences. Chinese students have been writing Chinese since childhood, so there is no problem with establishing the theme and structure when writing English—the challenge lies in selecting words and constructing sentences. Think about how we learned Chinese: in primary school, we did the work of "making sentences," and I still remember that when I learned three Chinese characters in class, the homework for that evening was to make 30 sentences! But think about how many natural English sentences our postgraduate students, who have studied English for over a decade, can actually construct! Now that the score for postgraduate entrance exam essays has been increased to 30 points, it’s not something that can be solved with a few "templates"—it’s time to work hard to improve your English skills. The words selected in this chapter are all basic vocabulary, that is, everyday language. Readers should practice more with a pen, only then can they "feel confident" and "write with ease." To facilitate comprehensive review of the vocabulary, detailed appendices and the postgraduate English exam vocabulary list are included at the back of the book. This book is closely aligned with the postgraduate entrance exam syllabus. On one hand, it trains readers' reading ability from the perspective of vocabulary cognition, emphasizing a holistic grasp and in-depth understanding. On the other hand, it trains readers' writing ability from the perspective of vocabulary usage, emphasizing collocation and accurate expression. Contains core vocabulary, basic vocabulary, out-of-range vocabulary, and writing vocabulary.
