Early pregnancy test strips showing negative mean no pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I have been amenorrheic for 38 days. A pregnancy test showed negative, but I haven't experienced any signs of menstruation. Now, my lower back is extremely sore and painful, and I can't exert force—it's like the pain I used to feel during menstrual cramps. Is it possible that I might be pregnant?
First follow-up question: It's already 40 days, and there's still no reaction.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, the HCG test can detect a positive reaction as early as 35 days after the menstrual period stops. Since your period is delayed by 4 days, the negative result on the early pregnancy test may be due to a short menstrual cycle, but pregnancy cannot be ruled out. If your menstrual cycle is regular and you had intercourse during the ovulation period without contraception, you can wait a few more days to see. Around 40 days after the menstrual period, you can do an early pregnancy test or an ultrasound examination. Generally, an ultrasound at 40 days after the menstrual period can show a gestational sac. I hope my answer is helpful to you.
