In The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, what strikes the soul first is the story of Liu Zhengfeng and Qu Yang. Liu Zhengfeng and Qu Yang are musical soulmates, both having reached the pinnacle of musical mastery, and they consider each other as lifelong companions. However, they belong to different sects. Liu Zhengfeng is the second most powerful master of the Hengshan Sect, while Qu Yang belongs to the Evil Sect (Mo Jiao), which is rejected by the orthodox sects. The Hengshan Sect is under the Five Mountains Swordsmanship Alliance, and the overall leader of the alliance is Zuo Lengchan. This man is cunning and ambitious, aiming to unify the Taishan, Hengshan, Heshan, Huashan, and Songshan sects into one. In reality, he seeks to absorb and eliminate the other sects through his own Songshan Sect, becoming the sole martial arts overlord. Then, he plans to eliminate the Shaolin, Wudang sects, and the Evil Sect to achieve his ambition of unifying the martial world and ruling it alone.
Therefore, he uses the excuse of "righteousness and elegance" to force Liu Zhengfeng to eliminate Qu Yang and submit to his command.
