Features: Pursuing the perfect development of human existence and advancing the harmonious progress of a society governed by virtue—this is a timeless issue that humans have always sought to understand and practice. It is through this self-aware recognition and practical engagement with this issue that humanity has moved from ancient ignorance to modern civilization, creating abundant material and spiritual wealth. However, since the human understanding and practice of this issue are an ever-evolving, progressive social activity striving for perfection, an ideal, flawless answer to this question cannot be achieved once and for all, nor can it remain unchanged once formed. It will exist as long as humanity survives and will be renewed as humanity progresses. The long-standing Chinese traditional culture is the crystallization of the rich wisdom of the Chinese nation's understanding and practice of this issue. Confucian culture, as the core component of Chinese traditional culture, possesses profound insights into this matter. Confucian culture is centered on the humanistic way of achieving the perfect development of human existence, and its essence lies in the pursuit of self-improvement and the well-being of others, embodying the values of an inner sage and an outer king. Therefore, whether viewed from the content and characteristics of Confucian culture or from its value orientation, it can be said that Confucian culture is, in essence, a doctrine on how to manage human social behavior. In other words, Confucian management philosophy is the core of Confucian culture, shaping its historical significance and value.
Exploring Confucian management philosophy can be approached from two aspects: the philosophical thoughts on management and the methodological thoughts on management. This book is structured accordingly, divided into two parts: "Part 1: The Philosophy of Confucian Management" and "Part 2: The Methods of Confucian Management." In Part 1, the book discusses the theoretical foundation of Confucian management, its types, objects, purposes, and essence. It argues that Confucian management philosophy is built upon the theory of malleable human nature (the idea that a benevolent person is a human being), the theory of behavioral norms (the integration of virtue, ritual, politics, and law), and the theory of value orientation (self-improvement and the well-being of others). This not only determines the content, essence, and purpose of Confucian management but also shapes the core characteristics of Confucian culture. In Part 2, the book explores the Confucian methods of managing by principle and flexibility, as well as the methods of planning, organizing, leading, controlling, and educating. It posits that Confucian management is characterized by the method of managing by principle and flexibility, which is primarily based on the principle of the Golden Mean, the theory of change, and the strategy of combining ritual and law. This method is embedded within various Confucian management approaches, demonstrating the implementation strategies of adhering to principles while adapting to change and pursuing self-improvement and the well-being of others.
Thus, this book provides both a macro-level exposition of Confucian management philosophy and a micro-level revelation of its methods, aiming to present a comprehensive view of its content. Throughout its evolution, Confucian management philosophy has contributed to the progress and development of Chinese civilization. It not only had a profound historical impact in ancient society but also retains unique value for reference in modern times. Therefore, thoroughly and comprehensively exploring Confucian management philosophy is beneficial for understanding the historical trajectory of human self-management and promoting its continuous advancement.
