After getting pregnant, why do I still have my period?

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: Menstruation (blood) still occurs after pregnancy, with a little bit every day, accompanied by lower abdominal pain. What is the reason for this? What medication should be taken?
Duration of the current illness:
Current general condition: Same as above
Medical history: Irregular menstruation, infertility (became pregnant after taking medication)
Auxiliary tests: None
Other: None

Doctor's answer:

Generally speaking, pregnancy usually stops menstruation. If the pregnant woman's corpus luteum cannot be converted into a corpus luteum of pregnancy by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in her body, and if the decidua basalis and the covering decidua have not completely fused, a small part of the endometrium remains active and is influenced by ovarian hormones. As a result, there may be monthly bleeding that is less than a normal menstrual period or even difficult to notice. However, after the third month of pregnancy, the placenta primarily secretes sex hormones to replace the function of the ovaries. At this point, the decidua basalis and the covering decidua fuse, and menstruation will no longer occur.
If menstruation occurs during pregnancy, it is recommended to rule out conditions such as threatened miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or cervical erosion that may cause vaginal bleeding. It is best to seek medical attention promptly for examination.
