Features: Zhang Hao, born in 1937, is originally from Chuzhou County, Anhui Province. After graduating from the Department of History at National Taiwan University, he studied in the United States and obtained master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. He has long served as a professor in the Department of History at Ohio State University in the United States and is currently a professor in the School of Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is also a fellow of the Academia Sinica in Taipei. His research fields include the history of Chinese thought, particularly modern Chinese thought. His major works include Liang Qichao and the Transformation of Chinese Thought (1890—1907), Chinese Intellectuals in Crisis: The Search for Meaning and Order (1895—1911), The Spirit of the Martyr and Critical Consciousness: An Analysis of Tan Sitong's Thought, The Dim Awareness and the Tradition of Democracy, and he is also one of the contributors to the late Qing section of The Cambridge History of China.
