1. The scope of this book primarily focuses on literary and artistic criticism documents, supplemented by documents on drama and fiction criticism.
2. The arrangement is generally chronological, from ancient times to the late Qing Dynasty, with chapters divided by dynasties. Each chapter includes a section titled "General Introduction," summarizing the distribution and current status of documents from each era. Below the general introduction, the documents are categorized into individual works, poetic and literary discussions, lyrical and dramatic discussions, selected editions with annotations, notes and miscellaneous writings, as well as letters and prefaces.
3. The documents recorded in this book are primarily extant and inherited works, with occasional inclusion of bibliographic references.
4. For important documents, concise annotations are provided, detailing their volumes, authors, versions, bibliographic records, formats, and main content. For particularly significant and influential works, dedicated sections are devoted to discussions, which, in addition to the aforementioned annotations, also explain the current research status. General documents are listed in a bibliography, noting their authors and common versions for easy reference.
5. The annotations in this book are generally based on currently most complete or more common versions.
6. The selection of documents for annotation is relatively broad for ancient to Wei, Jin, and the Six Dynasties periods, with more detailed descriptions. For the Sui, Tang, and later periods, due to the abundance of materials, the selection is more rigorous.
7. Documents from China’s literary and artistic criticism preserved in Japan, including Chinese woodblock and Japanese woodblock prints, are also included. Whether or not to include relatively common documents depends on the circumstances.
8. Documents on ancient Chinese literary and artistic criticism preserved in Japan, particularly Japanese woodblock prints, are appended at the end of the volume.
