Features: "Selected Works" is finalized, with some analysis of eighteen essays. I found that the most recent piece was written a year ago, while the earliest one dates back thirty-six years. As for the original publication places of these writings, most were in Hong Kong, followed by Taiwan, and a few recent ones were in mainland China. The Chinese societies in these two regions and mainland China are where I was born, grew up, and worked. Although the United States and Europe are an unforgettable space in my academic and intellectual journey, I always feel it is a matter of pride to write in Chinese characters in these Chinese places. Since 1949, it has been half a century since I left the mainland where I was born. After 1985, I returned to "home" several times, but my visits were brief and still felt like meeting a familiar stranger. The publication of this "Selected Works" can be considered a kind of "settling down" for a "different kind" of returned overseas Chinese.
