Features: "The South American Way" narrates a story that, in a certain sense and particularly in terms of character structure, resembles a modern version of "Anna Karenina": a smart, beautiful, and emotionally rich woman—Irina (Anna)—marries a foolish and mediocre official—Mansurov (Kalinin)—to escape the suffocating atmosphere of her home. She betrays her husband, only to encounter a hypocrite who treats women as playthings. Irina is the head of the research institute's document room, and the repetitive daily tasks leave her feeling stifled. Thus, she actively seeks an extramarital affair, trying to break through decades of stable and dull life. However, her lover and superior soon leaves without saying goodbye, taking a posting far away; her husband, upon learning of her infidelity, merely speaks in anger rather than taking action; and her only son, who leaves for military service, also fails to shatter this family lacking cohesion. All these rebellious acts ultimately result in nothing more than emotional turmoil, and the world she faces remains unchanged. In despair, Irina adopts an early fantasy—a fantasy about the survival methods of distant, ignorant South America—as her behavioral model, bringing a touch of vitality to her life. Later, Irina falls ill with a sudden illness. After recovering, her restless mentality calms down, and her romantic thoughts vanish, naturally bringing the "South American Way" to an end.
