The main plot is as follows: Duke Orsino of Illyria loves Olivia, but she rejects him repeatedly. Meanwhile, a pair of twins, Viola and Sebastian, sail to Illyria and are shipwrecked nearby. Viola disguises herself as a man and becomes a page in Duke Orsino's household, serving as his messenger to Olivia. Olivia falls in love with Viola, who is dressed as a man, while Viola secretly falls in love with the Duke. Later, Olivia accidentally meets Sebastian, Viola's twin brother, and they mistakenly marry each other. The Duke also finally marries Viola. The play ends with the reunion of the siblings and the union of the lovers.
