Features: As we know, Genesis primarily narrates the creation of Yahweh God and the initial implementation of His plan, including the creation of heaven and earth, humanity, marriage and family, the origins of art and science, and especially the origins of sin, redemption, the mediator, and the chosen people. Its timeline spans millennia from antiquity to the Bronze Age, while its spatial scope extends from the heavens to the earth, from the interior of Noah's Ark to the Shinar Plain, and across Egypt and Canaan, covering tens of thousands of miles. Its characters range from God and angels to Adam and Eve, from the patriarchs and ancestors to the people of various nations, numbering in the thousands. It lacks a dramatic conflict and intersperses many genealogies. However, in the first part of the story, the author adopts a sequential narrative, with one hand following the dominant lines of God's creation, law, and salvation as a thread, and the other hand carefully selecting many representative characters, events, and scenes to embellish and portray them, thereby presenting the grand tapestry of "Genesis" in an engaging and captivating manner.
The first part of Light of Genesis reworks and compresses the original 50 chapters of Genesis into four sections ("Origins," "Abraham," "Jacob," and "Joseph"), totaling 30 chapters, each with a suggestive title. Many people have previously written biblical stories in various forms, but as far as I know, Dr. Wang's attempt is the first of its kind. Of course, whether such an attempt succeeds remains to be tested by experts and readers. Nevertheless, I believe the attempt itself is meaningful. It is said that Dr. Wang's purpose in translating and annotating the Bible—or the goal he pursues—is to convey the theological and philosophical connotations of the original work accurately in concise and contemporary language, so that ordinary people with lower educational levels can understand the meaning of the scriptures even through listening. His purpose in writing "oral stories" or "appreciation guides" is to lay a path for readers or listeners to reach the holy temple of the scriptures, because stories can be long or short, deep or shallow, while the scriptures are eternal. In this sense, we can say that unlike Dr. Feng Xiang, whose Genesis—Legends and Annotations (Jiangsu People's Publishing House, 2004) emphasizes textual structural analysis, Dr. Wang's annotations place greater emphasis on interpreting the scriptures as a complete system.
Regardless, how exciting it would be if a written or printed text could speak with vivid and colorful words, just as a living person once conveyed messages! In his 1986 book Museography: Reflections on Orality and Literacy from Antiquity to the Present (Chapter 3 titled "The Modern Discovery of Oral Culture"), Professor E.A. Havelock of Yale University proposes the bold question "Can texts speak?" and the possibility of allowing ancient Greek texts to "speak" again, using early textual worlds to peer into earlier oral worlds. These new research orientations demonstrate how indispensable the "process" of literature is to understanding literary phenomena compared to the "product" of literature, and what position the "process" of literature should hold and how it should develop in future literary research. Could Dr. Wang's Light of Genesis, which combines oral stories with written scriptures, inspire reflections on the understanding of religious classics and media methods? We look forward to Dr. Wang and his colleagues continuously providing readers with new and exquisite spiritual nourishment through this illustrated "Tree of Life" series, so that they not only enjoy beauty but also draw rich and beneficial sustenance to keep their own tree of life evergreen.
