Features: This is a series of elective textbooks for College English, designed for non-English majors at the undergraduate level. It is compiled according to the new "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses" issued by the Ministry of Education of China. The series meets the latest requirements of China's college English teaching reform, applies new teaching concepts in English, incorporates recent achievements in English teaching, draws on a wide range of references, and is a comprehensive series of elective college English textbooks (can also be used as required courses). This series is suitable for senior undergraduate or graduate students of non-English majors, especially for those preparing for the College English Test Band 4 and 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) and pursuing postgraduate studies. It has been tested and widely praised by faculty and students from participating institutions such as Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing University of Technology, and Beijing University of Aeronautics.
The textbook is divided into 12 units, with a total of 48 articles. The content of each unit includes: Focus Perspective, Social Life, Education and Healthcare, Finance and Economy, Political System, Science and Military, World News, Ideology and Belief, Family Life, Art and Youth, Environmental Protection, and Sports. Each article consists of a pre-reading guide, main text, vocabulary list, notes on difficult points, background knowledge, and a news glossary that lists vocabulary after CET-4 in the text, along with part of speech and phonetic symbols, as well as bilingual explanations. This facilitates self-study. The notes on difficult points are detailed and rich, improving both language skills and reading breadth. The background knowledge is introduced in Chinese, covering relevant historical events and social hot topics to help students understand and master the content. The news knowledge section introduces the linguistic features of English-language newspapers and magazines in the UK and the US, as well as basic news. The reading comprehension and hot topic discussion questions help readers improve their understanding and critical thinking skills.
This book is designed as a textbook for the elective course "English Newspapers and Magazines" for third and fourth-year undergraduate students. It can also serve as a reference for students who have passed CET-4 and are preparing for CET-6 or postgraduate studies. Additionally, it can be used by English majors or enthusiasts to improve their reading skills.
