Features: The History of Sino-Portuguese Relations (1513-1999) is divided into three volumes, totaling approximately 1.2 million words. The author fully utilizes published and unpublished historical documents from both China and Portugal, while also citing archival materials from other countries. It objectively, comprehensively, deeply, and systematically elaborates on the political and diplomatic relations between China and Portugal from June 1513 (the fifth month of the eighth year of the Zhengde reign in the Ming Dynasty) when a Portuguese merchant was sent to China on a mission of exploration and set foot on Chinese territory, to December 1999 when the Portuguese handed over the administration of Macau and withdrew according to the Joint Declaration on the Question of Macao between China and Portugal, covering nearly 500 years of the development and evolution of their political and diplomatic relations. To date, no comprehensive monograph has been published in China or abroad to systematically review and study the history of Sino-Portuguese political and diplomatic relations. Therefore, The History of Sino-Portuguese Relations (1513-1999) undoubtedly fills a gap in the relevant research fields both in China and abroad. At the same time, it is also a major project completed and concluded within the history discipline of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Author Huang Qinghua is a researcher at the Institute of Modern History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and is a rigorous scholar with a professional research focus on Sino-foreign relations. His current research emphasis is on the history of Sino-Portuguese relations and the history of Sino-French relations. To study the history of Sino-Portuguese relations, he abandoned his previously familiar research fields, spent nearly a decade on this work, and even took the time to learn Portuguese. From 1997 to 1998, he spent a year in Portugal researching various Portuguese archival materials, enduring hardships that others could hardly imagine, and finally completed this masterpiece. Due to long-term overwork before and after the publication of this book, Huang Qinghua was hospitalized twice for cardiac intervention.
At the symposium, Mr. Huang Qinghua expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Institute of Modern History, the Funda??o Oriente Português, the Cultural Section of the Portuguese Embassy in China, and Huangshan Bookstore for their financial support and assistance.
