The two previously published selected works will be renamed "Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping, Volume 1" and "Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping, Volume 2" when their second editions are released. Volume 3 of the selected works contains 119 speeches, talks, and other pieces. A significant portion was previously unpublished. Works that were published in pamphlets such as "Building Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" (Revised Edition) and "Important Talks by Comrade Deng Xiaoping (February-July 1987)" and in newspapers were further edited and supplemented with important content based on transcripts during their inclusion in this selected works. This collection begins with the last piece of the previous selected works (1975–1982), "Opening Speech at the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of China," as the opening piece, and concludes with "Key Points of Talks in Wuhan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shanghai and Other Places" (January 18 to February 21, 1992).
