Features: This book has several key features. , we emphasize the scientific methods of clinical psychology. Both of us obtained our doctorates through graduate training in clinical psychology research and practice, which is based on the Boulder model training. Due to our scientific training, we firmly believe that research and practice are mutually influential and interactive. As you browse through this book, you will discover that integrating research and practice is a significant challenge in this field. We believe that research and practice should be interdependent—without clinical research, effective assessment or treatment methods cannot be proposed, and without clinical practice, it would be difficult to identify areas that need research. Therefore, in this book, we extensively incorporate new research findings, which guide the practice of clinical psychology assessment and intervention.
Second, we use four case studies to provide a more concrete understanding of the application of research. We introduce these case studies in the chapter and then proceed to diagnose, assess, and treat them. These cases reflect different types of psychological disorders, span the entire lifespan, and address important issues related to gender and ethnicity. These four cases, along with other clinical examples in this book, vividly illustrate the differences among various theoretical approaches in the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of psychopathology. For example, we provide a detailed description of the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999, to raise questions and explore how different theoretical models of human behavior would explain such behavior, particularly how the humanistic approach to psychotherapy would interpret this situation.
Third, in other books, important branches of clinical psychology, such as clinical child psychology, clinical health psychology, mental health psychology, and neuropsychology, are often treated as separate chapters or issues. We believe that these branches are integral and inseparable parts of clinical psychology. We incorporate them into this book through the use of case studies and by connecting them appropriately to the content of other chapters.
Fourth, we provide materials to encourage students to engage in critical thinking. For example, we present numerous psychological theories that form the basis of clinical psychology assessment and intervention methods (Chapter 4), guiding students to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these theories. Similarly, when discussing research on the effectiveness of psychotherapy (Chapter 15), we introduce students to the characteristics of reliable research methods, enabling them to assess the quality of existing research. Finally, in this book, we have adopted several measures to enhance students' learning experience. For instance, at the end of each chapter, we list key terms and names, as well as references such as books and journals. This book is accompanied by a corresponding website (www.mhhe.com/compas), which includes key questions for each chapter, supplementary materials that are regularly updated, and important links to online resources. Additionally, there is a computerized teaching resource library available for instructors.
