When I was in primary school, I was already very familiar with the name Lian Kuoru. His storytelling was full of vigor, quick-witted, and resonant. I often listened to Lian Sir's storytelling from the "radio" after school. Writer Wang Meng once said that Lian Kuoru's eloquence was extraordinary, and those who could personally listen to his storytelling were lucky. Back then, whenever he performed on TV, the rickshaw pullers on the streets would stop working. I don’t know how others evaluated him, but I believe he was one of the most famous storytellers of the 20th century. Li Yan (painter, son of Li Kuchan) wrote Awakening the World with the Storytelling of Lian Kuoru. This book tells the personal of a storytelling artist, serving as an excellent work for everyone to fully understand a storytelling giant.
A single clack of the storytelling mallet shakes the heavens and earth. I still remember Lian Kuoru’s storytelling. Lian Kuoru was not only a significant figure in the history of Chinese quyi in the 20th century but also a national treasure born from Chinese folk art and a symbol of traditional Chinese folk culture. By recounting his life story, we are preserving a precious historical record for the modern history of Chinese culture and art. His storytelling art, which reached perfection and surpassed its generation, belongs to Chinese culture and also to world culture.
This audio book tells the biographical work of the great storyteller Lian Kuoru, who is a milestone in the history of Chinese quyi. From a poor child to an artistic master, from an illiterate to a learned scholar, Lian Kuoru drifted through the world in his youth and gained fame in the quyi world in his youth. Starting with The Romance of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Lian Kuoru gradually developed his own storytelling style and earned the reputation of "Every household listens to storytelling, and the streets are quiet when Lian Kuoru performs." This book vividly and authentically tells more than 50 stories to showcase the legendary life of this storyteller, narrated by the master’s daughter, the renowned storytelling artist Lian Liru.
