Hou Changxi was born in 1945 in Beijing. He is a crosstalk performer with the Tianjin Quyi Troupe and a first-class performing artist. He is a member of the China Quyi Association and a council member of the Tianjin Quyi Association. He served in the military in his early years before joining the Tianjin Quyi Troupe. He was mentored by the renowned crosstalk master Yan Xiaoru. With solid fundamentals and a natural, fluid performance style, he has consistently adapted to the times by writing and performing his own works. He has won numerous awards in Tianjin and national crosstalk competitions. For example:
- The crosstalk Full Spring won the second prize in the 1982 National Quyi New Works Competition (Northern Section) in performance.
- The crosstalk Family Symphony won the outstanding creation award and third prize in performance in the 1988 National "Xinghai Cup" Professional Crosstalk Competition.
- The crosstalk Hou's Writing and Directing won the outstanding work award in the 1990 National "Tongling Cup" Crosstalk Writing Competition.
- The crosstalk Supernatural Power won the outstanding work award in the 1991 "China Yuwang Pavilion Cup" Crosstalk Television Competition.
- The short crosstalk Naming won the 1992 National "Zawenbao Cup" Satire and Humor Literature Award.
Among these, Family Symphony and Hou's Writing and Directing were both awarded the Fourth and Fifth "Lu Xun Literature and Art Awards" in Tianjin.
His short crosstalk pieces Changing Names, Guessing Movies, Playful Eulogy, and Etiquette have been widely performed and passed down among fellow crosstalk artists. In recent years, he has also compiled and adapted a series of short jokes, which are included in this disc and published together.
