Guo Degang, born in 1973 in Tianjin, has a lifelong passion for various folk arts. At the age of eight, he devoted himself to the art world, first studying storytelling under the renowned storyteller Gao Qinghai, and later learning xiangsheng (comic dialogue) from the master Chang Baofeng. He has also been instructed by many other xiangsheng masters. During this time, he dedicated himself to studying other theatrical forms such as Peking Opera, Pingxi Opera, and Hebei Bangzi. His journey through the (theatrical world) as a wenyou (literary clown) and tongchui (bell ringer) played a significant role in enriching his xiangsheng performance. With his experience in multiple art forms, he has developed a distinctive personal style. Currently residing in Beijing, he frequently participates in xiangsheng performances and is involved in hosting, acting, film and television, and entertainment programs. He has also written the folk book "Talking About Beijing."
In the realm of xiangsheng, he has once collaborated with the renowned xiangsheng artist Fan Zhenyu. After Fan retired, Guo worked with the Beijing xiangsheng master Zhang Wenshun for an extended period, performing traditional xiangsheng in various Beijing theaters. Some of his frequently performed segments include: "Tie the Baby," "Learning the Radio," "Finding a Performance," "White Affairs Meeting," "Japanese Bangzi," "Reporting Dishes," "Peeling Tiles," "Giving Away a Wife and Offering a Son," "Pulling Foreign Pictures," "Wuduizi," and "Sheep Climbing Trees," among others. He has also unearthed and preserved some less commonly performed traditional xiangsheng pieces.
