Hai Rui (1514–1587), styled Ruixian, was a native of Qiongshan. He was a jinshi graduate and a famous incorruptible official of the Ming Dynasty. He held various positions, including county magistrate, assistant prefect, minister of revenue, minister of war, vice minister of state, and right assistant censor-in-chief. Known for his integrity and self-discipline, he dared to defy the powerful even when in low positions and never flattered or curry favor. Loyal and fearless in his advice, he once bought a coffin, bid farewell to his wife, and risked his life to submit memorials. Throughout his life, Hai lived in poverty, suppressed the powerful, comforted the destitute, and fought against corrupt officials, earning deep love from the people. His life story is widely circulated in folklore. Hai Qing Tian tells the story of the Ming Dynasty's incorruptible official, Hai Rui. The book begins with Hai Rui traveling to the capital and staying at a tofu shop owned by the Zhang family, describing a series of struggles between Hai Rui and the servants, managers, and even the master of the Yan family—Yan Song.
