Features: Currently the earliest known painting on silk fabric in the world. These are two silk banners from the Warring States period of China, depicting the tomb owner and deities, symbolizing the sending of the deceased's soul to heaven. From the Han and Wei dynasties onwards, painting gradually acquired an independent aesthetic significance. Scroll paintings, due to their suitability for public and private collections and appreciation activities, evolved into a primary form of painting and continued to develop, leading to the prosperous Tang and Song periods in the history of painting. This volume collects 82 works from the Warring States to the Tang dynasties, including silk paintings from the Warring States and Western Han periods, famous works such as Gu Kaizhi's The Admonitions of the Palace Ladies, Tang dynasty screen paintings unearthed in Xinjiang, Dunhuang cave paintings preserved in museums in the UK and France, as well as major Tang dynasty masterpieces stored in museums in the US, Japan, and the Taipei Palace Museum.
