Features: Chinese calligraphy and painting are nurtured within the Chinese cultural context. Under the influence of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist philosophical thought, they have formed a unique aesthetic system. As a treasure of Chinese culture and a pearl of Eastern art, they hold a distinct and glorious position in the world of art. Chinese calligraphy, rooted in Chinese literature, not only possesses practical value but also holds an irreplaceable aesthetic value. It emphasizes brushwork, ink techniques, and composition, permeating the calligrapher's cultivation, personality, temperament, and emotional expression. Thus, it is said that "calligraphy is the 'heart's painting'." Chinese painting focuses on imagery and form, using meaningful shapes, brushwork, colors, and composition to represent objective things and convey the poet's thoughts, literary intentions, and emotions. Therefore, it is said that "painters follow the heart" and "painters are the pinnacle of literature." Chinese calligraphy and painting are traditionally believed to share the same origin, often regarded as siblings. Painters are often skilled in calligraphy, and calligraphers are often skilled in painting. There is also the saying, "When calligraphy reaches the level of painting, it achieves its ultimate height, and when painting reaches the level of calligraphy, it reaches its limit." Throughout history, countless outstanding talents have dedicated themselves to the art of calligraphy and painting, either innovating within tradition or drawing inspiration from other cultures to enrich Chinese art, ensuring the enduring vitality of this art form.
In today's China, calligraphy and painting are immersed in the tide of economic globalization, yet they increasingly highlight the uniqueness of Chinese artistic identity, the necessity of upholding national cultural identity, and the urgency of promoting and nurturing talented calligraphers and painters. Inspired by this, the editorial team of Zhonghua Yingcai (China's Talents) has collaborated with the National Museum, the China Art Museum, the Calligraphy and Painting Institute of China Central Television, Rongbaozhai, and Yachang Art Network to select and recommend outstanding talents, jointly organizing the "Exhibition of 100 Outstanding Contemporary Calligraphers and Painters" and publishing this catalog. It is a heartfelt effort for those who are passionate about this art form.
