Features: Charlotte Bront? is the author of one of the most beloved novels in British literary history, Jane Eyre. She was born on April 21, 1816, as the third child of Patrick Bront? and Maria Bront?. However, she was just one of the exceptionally talented children in the Bront? family. Her brother, Patrick Branwell, also possessed artistic talent, but unfortunately, he fell into addiction and alcoholism, ultimately achieving nothing. But her sister Emily wrote the masterpiece Wuthering Heights. Additionally, her youngest sister Anne, born in 1820, wrote Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. After their mother, Mrs. Bront?, died of cancer in 1821, tragic misfortunes continued to befall this unfortunate family. Three years later, Charlotte’s sister Elizabeth and Maria died of tuberculosis. In 1839, Charlotte began working as a governess. At that time, it was one of the few jobs available to educated women who needed to work. However, being a governess was arduous and lonely, with no opportunity to communicate with the students’ parents and isolated from the other servants in the house. This hellish monotony was vividly depicted in Jane Eyre. In 1846, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne published a collection of poems together. This collection had little impact at the time but sparked the three sisters’ desire to write novels. Charlotte later wrote The Professor, which was rejected by several publishers. Then, she wrote Jane Eyre, which was published in 1847 and caused a sensation. However, tragedy struck again: in 1848, Branwell and Emily. The following year, Anne also passed away. Charlotte became the only surviving child of the Bront? family. She then wrote two novels, Shirley and Villette, and traveled abroad. This lady later wrote a biography of Charlotte. In 1854, Charlotte married the Reverend Nicholls. However, their married life was short-lived. On March 31, 1855, Charlotte died at the age of 39.
