Features: Father Chen Bulei was the Director of the Secretariat of Chiang Kai-shek, known as the "intellectual backbone" of the Kuomintang. He was loyal to Chiang Kai-shek and the reactionary forces of the Kuomintang, but the Kuomintang's ultimate defeat on the mainland shattered his ideals. Despite such a father, he had a rebellious daughter. His daughter, Chen Lian, was a staunch believer in communism and an underground worker for the Communist Party. She was willing to sacrifice everything for the cause of national liberation. Due to their differing political ideals, the conflicts between the two generations could not be reconciled and only intensified, forcing them to sever their family ties and eventually leading to a complete break. The complexities of national affairs and family matters, ideals and, and the era and fate intertwined, causing a loving father and daughter to take completely different life paths. Yet, under different historical contexts, both father and daughter met tragic ends through suicide.
