Features: Han Gyegui, born into a commoner's family, from the very beginning of her career focused her attention on the marginalized middle-class strata, striving to portray their struggles, sighs, and helplessness. Her portrayals are so vivid and lifelike, as if in a sketch, that they resonated deeply with many Koreans, which is why she became a popular author in Korea. People of Yoomyeong Village is a representative work of Han Gyegui's commoner-themed novels, and it is precisely this short story collection that established her position in contemporary Korean literature. While the stories record people's lives, writing them taught me more about the inner aspects of human existence. As I wrote, I learned about the twists and turns the village and its residents had overcome to reach their current state. In other words, Yoomyeong Village made me reflect more on all social strata of our society. Surrounding the lives of the people in Yoomyeong Village, there is no other way but to reflect them with pessimism. I could only silently pursue what lies beyond the darkness. Nevertheless, behind it, there are inevitably some unspoken intentions in the novel that are subtly corrected and integrated, even hoping it contains some unexpected imagery, because life is not necessarily pessimistic. However, "expectation" is the reward that readers can only receive when they embrace the author and love the work.
