Chapter: Observing Office Politics from "Dae Jang Geum"
In the TV drama "Dae Jang Geum," there is a young female doctor named Ale. As a newly assigned doctor-in-training, Dae Jang Geum is ordered to take the pulse of the ailing queen alongside Ale. Their pulse-taking results differ, and it is later revealed that Ale made a misdiagnosis. Misdiagnosing the queen in a medical meeting was a grave offense! At the medical conference, Ale kneels before the doctors and insists on accepting punishment. Ale says, "It is all my fault. Please punish me!"
The Chief of Internal Medicine says, "You should indeed be punished."
Zheng Da Ren says, "However, accurately identifying the pulse is not an easy task."
Ale says, "No, because I have been responsible for taking the queen's pulse every year, my attitude has become arrogant. Please send me to the Huimin Bureau for more training!"
The Chief of Internal Medicine says, "No need for that. Just know that you made a mistake."
Ale says, "I cannot accept that. Because of my mistake, the queen is now in unprecedented danger. As a doctor, how can I allow myself to make such an error? Once a mistake is made in practicing medicine, it is bound to lead to more mistakes. Please, send me away!"
All the officials are moved by Ale's humility and reason and advise her not to be too hard on herself. However, the Chief of Internal Medicine is a very biased person. He does not blame Ale for her mistake but says nothing about Dae Jang Geum's great achievement. After all the officials leave, the Chief of Internal Medicine tells Ale, "You don't need to be so hard on yourself." Ale replies, "No, I must recognize my mistake to improve. In the future, I will learn more from Dae Jang Geum."
Yin Fei remarks, "Ale the doctor is truly honest and upright." Kind-hearted Dae Jang Geum feels guilty for making Ale look so bad and says, "I am sorry." But as soon as everyone leaves, Ale immediately changes her demeanor and says to Dae Jang Geum, "You think you can bring me down? It's not that easy!"
Dae Jang Geum is taken aback—Ale had just been humble and self-critical, but now she is saying this. It turns out she was just putting on a show for others. She is a true fake, leaving the still self-critical Dae Jang Geum confused and bewildered. After that, Ale secretly opposes Dae Jang Geum at every turn and deliberately sets up obstacles for her work.
