The book is published in volumes. Marshals and generals are arranged according to the official list released at the time. Others are sorted in order of senior general, medium general, and junior general, with names within the same rank arranged by stroke order. Generals promoted between 1955 and 1964, including those promoted after 1988 (inclusive) with higher ranks than those before, are introduced in the text but not reflected in the roster order. The volume includes 10 marshals, 10 generals, 57 senior generals, and 177 medium generals. 1360 junior generals are divided between the second and third volumes.
