Features: Tang poetry, Song lyrics, and Yuan qu are three literary genres that have a continuous lineage in the history of Chinese literature. Lyrics are a precious gem in China's long-standing culture. They originated during the Sui and Tang dynasties and reached their peak in the Song dynasty. Initially, lyrics were song lyrics accompanied by music, gradually evolving into a poetic form with varying sentence lengths. Each lyric has a specific lyric title (ci pai), which determines the number of characters, lines, and rhyme patterns of the piece, with no inherent connection between the title and the content. Lyrics are an important form of Chinese literature, and the Song dynasty was a period of great achievements in lyric composition. As the saying goes, "Each era has its own literature," and thus, lyrics are the genre that best represents Song literature. Lyrics are also known as "long and short sentences" or "quzi ci," and they are believed to have originated in the mid-Tang dynasty, maturing in the Northern Song dynasty. The development of lyrics is closely tied to music; they could be set to melodies and sung. The influence of music became one of the key factors shaping the stylistic features of lyrics. Song lyrics draw from a wide range of themes, covering diverse and comprehensive content, including works about national concerns and the people, nostalgic and sentimental pieces, and poems about frontier battles, among others. The styles of different lyric writers vary greatly, such as Su Shi's bold and grand, Liu Yong's tender and lingering, and Xin Qiji's passionate and stirring. The sentences in lyrics are of varying lengths, creating a rollercoaster of emotions that is both moving and captivating. The Three Hundred Best Lyrics of the Song Dynasty was originally compiled and selected by the renowned modern lyricist Zhu Xiaozang. Although the author disagrees with some of the selections, considering the significant influence of this anthology, it has been retained in its original form. Brief annotations and critiques have been added, along with attempts to recreate the original atmosphere in rhyming verse.
