Features: Wang Zhihuan solves a case based on details
"White sun sets behind the mountains, Yellow River flows into the sea. To see a thousand miles further, climb one more story." After reading this magnificent and profound poem, you will surely grasp its profound philosophy. The author of this poem is Wang Zhihuan, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. He was not only talented in literature but also wise, skilled in deducing the truth from details, and thus earned widespread praise. During his tenure as the magistrate of Wenchuan County, Wang Zhihuan once handled a case: A family had a head of household who traveled abroad for business every year, leaving only two women—his sister-in-law and his niece—in the house, relying on each other. The sister-in-law was capable and considerate, while the niece was gentle and beautiful, and their life was stable. However, one evening, the niece suddenly died in her room. The sister-in-law discovered the incident and immediately reported it to the county government. Wang Zhihuan asked the sister-in-law, "How did you discover the incident?" The sister-in-law replied, "That night, I was grinding grain in the mill when I suddenly heard the niece's desperate cries for help. I rushed to her bedroom and saw a shadow in the courtyard. Because it was dark, I couldn’t make out her face. I saw that she was bare-chested and tried to grab her, but she was strong and smooth-spined, and she escaped." Wang Zhihuan then asked, "You two young women were home alone. Did you not take precautions?" "We had a yellow dog at home, but for some reason, I didn’t hear it bark that night." Upon hearing this, Wang Zhihuan flew into a rage, "That dog fails to protect its master—how despicable!" The next day, it was a temple fair, and Wang Zhihuan decided to publicly interrogate the vicious dog in front of everyone. This was indeed a novel idea. Nearby villagers who came to the fair heard the news and came to watch Wang Zhihuan interrogate the dog. More and more people gathered, filling the entire temple. At this moment, Wang Zhihuan ordered the guards to close the temple doors tightly. He herded children, the elderly, and women out in batches, leaving only about a hundred young and strong men inside. These men looked at each other, unsure of what Wang Zhihuan planned. Wang Zhihuan roared, "All of you, take off your clothes and stand facing the wall!" The men dared not disobey and complied. Wang Zhihuan examined each man’s spine one by one and found two red marks on one man’s back. He asked, "What’s your name?" "I’m called Dog." "Do you know the deceased?" "No."
