Features: For a selection of this kind, the following explanations are necessary:
1. Although the title of this book is "Annual Selection," due to the publishing constraints provided by the publisher, the selected works are limited to literary translations published in China between October 2004 and October 2005.
2. Due to the difficulty in collecting materials, the selected works in this book are limited to translations published in various journals in mainland China, without including those published in newspapers and magazines in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
3. Due to the vast number of long-form translations published by different publishers, which are difficult to collect and often involve retranslations of classic works, the book has not included them after careful consideration.
4. The arrangement of the book is basically based on the geographical order of the Americas, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, followed by an approximate chronological order of publication.
5. The "world literature translations" mentioned in this book do not include translations of Chinese works into foreign languages, translations of ethnic literary works into foreign languages, or translations of works by ethnic minorities within China into Chinese. In fact, translations of Chinese literary works into foreign languages are also published domestically.
6. The "selected literary works" in this book refer to a relatively small number of works that are representative and readable. Of course, we strive to select the best works in each genre.
7. While considering the artistic quality of the works themselves, we also take into account the balance of various countries, ethnic groups, and languages worldwide, as well as the balance of different genres. The authors and translators are secondary. However, this level of consideration may only be a wish of a good teacher, as important works must be highlighted, and there is an equal standard of artistic quality that guides us.
8. To meet the needs of readers, compared to Selected Foreign Literary Works of 2004, we have appropriately increased the number of novels and essays, and the number of poems is also quite substantial. Due to the length of the novels, we had to omit them temporarily.
9. To show respect for the original publications, we have noted the source at the end of each work, which can also be used for further reference by translation researchers.
10. To preserve the original form of the works, we have only corrected a few typographical errors.
