Publish Date: 2000-01-01
Features: As an experienced veteran, the author has distilled his thoughts and countless hard lessons into 54 concise rules, covering everything from product design, program development and construction, to timely product release and successful business operations. When team composition becomes increasingly large and complex, Jim tells you how to keep the team efficient, how to salvage things when progress falls behind, how to face uncertain environments, self-reflection and self-examination, and how to maintain product stability. Jim also teaches you how to convey product information to consumers and how to create a favorable atmosphere for product launches, among other marketing methods. Additionally, the author shares the secrets of attracting and utilizing top talent in the appendix. Throughout the book, Jim demonstrates a deep aesthetic sensibility and reflects on the various psychological phenomena in software development: the death march, the mid-career creative block, mutually destructive arguments, software development confusion, unmasterable schedules, customer complaints, and more. Jim's rich, profound, and culturally inspired thoughts on software development have inspired Patrick McCarthy, who created a series of darkly humorous illustrations for this book. You will find that this book is as fascinating and interesting as software development itself. This book is written for software designers, developers, marketers, technical managers, and anyone eager to uncover the mysteries of software development. It is hoped that all those engaged in software development work can gain insights from this book.
