Features: The research object of this book mainly includes 13 Protestant universities and Fu Ren University of the Catholic Church. The content is limited to the teaching and research of church universities on Chinese history and culture, which is known as "Guoxue" (Chinese learning) after the 20th century. The book will discuss the topic in chronological order: First, it will examine how early missionaries, church schools, and church universities treated Chinese culture; second, it will analyze the changes in their teaching and research policies and their causes; third, it will specifically explore the activities carried out by various church universities in Guoxue research, their achievements, limitations, and the activities of some scholars; fourth, it will discuss the efforts of church universities to adapt to Chinese society with Guoxue as the focus, as well as the impact of external political factors on academic development; finally, it will review the evaluation of the academic heritage of church universities. In terms of research materials, the book makes every effort to utilize the original materials of these universities, including archives, selected archival materials, publications of each university, works of scholars who once worked at church universities, and reports on church universities in contemporary newspapers.
