In 1987, a book titled The Spy Catcher by a former British MI5 intelligence officer caused a sensation in Western society, and China Central Television (CCTV) also reported on it in News Broadcast. As a result, the domestic publishing industry was inspired, scholars and translators worked tirelessly to search for publishing information, and relevant publishers did their utmost to seize publishing opportunities. However, it was the unknown Wang Maimai who emerged victorious from the crowd, signing a contract with Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House. With his debut work, The Spy Catcher, he achieved a resounding success, with the publisher selling nearly 100,000 copies of Wang Maimai's translation in its first edition. The momentum quickly built, and in the following years, his translations of works such as Royal Sisters, Midnight Thoughts, Nancy Reagan's Memoirs, and The Unpublished Works of Mark Twain were published, each becoming bestsellers.
After 1990, due to teaching commitments, Wang Maimai began to compile college English textbooks and CET-4 and CET-6 exam preparation books. From then on, bookstores near universities across the country continuously introduced new best-selling titles by Wang Maimai English. It was as if overnight, a spring breeze swept the land, and thousands of trees bloomed like pear blossoms. Wang Maimai English became nearly the sole dominant force in the domestic college English teaching aid market, leading the trend for over a decade.
Today, the Wang Maimai English series has hundreds of titles, covering subjects from middle school to college and postgraduate entrance exams. Its brand has gained increasing popularity among readers due to its exceptionally clear explanations of textbook difficulties and its accurate grasp of exam trends. Surveys show that many college and high school students across the country own Wang Maimai brand books, with almost every student having at least one. The extent of its popularity is evident.
The College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) is a national standardized exam directly supervised by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and organized by the National College English Test Committee. It was first held in September 1987 and has been conducted for nearly 20 years. Currently, the exam is administered twice a year, before the end of each semester. Analysis of recent CET-4 exam papers reveals a trend toward assessing students' language fundamentals while emphasizing their ability to apply language comprehensively. This is primarily reflected in the following aspects:
1. Listening Comprehension: The compound dictation has been added to this section. This comprehensive test not only assesses students' listening skills but also their spelling, pronunciation, note-taking, and memory. It is expected that the listening section of the future CET-4 exam will continue this trend.
2. Reading Comprehension: This is the most heavily weighted section in the CET-4 exam. Analysis of recent papers shows that reading comprehension covers a wide range of topics, including biographies, social, cultural, everyday knowledge, and popular science. Among these, articles related to school education and university life, as well as those on sociology, psychology, environmental studies, and biographies, are most common. The exam syllabus specifies that reading comprehension passages should include "various genres, such as narratives, descriptions, expository texts, and argumentative essays." However, recent trends indicate that expository and argumentative essays are predominantly used for reading comprehension. These passages are characterized by rich information, complex structures, strong logical coherence, and a focus on abstract thinking such as summarizing, judging, and reasoning. The main question formats test candidates' ability to infer the central idea, general meaning, or details and facts of the passage.
3. Word Usage and Grammar Structure: These are traditional question types in the CET-4 exam, designed to assess students' vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Key areas of focus include homophones, near-synonyms, antonyms, collocations, and the differentiation of verbs, nouns, and adjectives. Grammar assessment emphasizes 13 types, such as subjunctive mood, participles, and non-finite verbs.
4. Cloze: This tests candidates' ability to apply language knowledge at the discourse level and has become a flexible question type in recent years.
5. English-Chinese Translation and Short Answer Questions: These are relatively new question types in recent years, focusing on testing students' foundational knowledge while cultivating their ability to understand, analyze, and express language.
6. Writing: This remains a crucial component of college English teaching, comprehensively assessing whether students can meet the teaching requirements specified in the syllabus and achieve the goals of language application and communication skills. Analysis of recent exam papers shows that outline-based essays, topic-sentence essays, and picture-table essays remain the main directions for CET-4 exam questions.
7. In addition to the above question types, we predict that the CET-4 exam may introduce a new type of question—Chinese-English Translation—in the near future. To help students familiarize themselves with and master this new question type, this book will introduce relevant techniques for Chinese-English Translation.
