Author: Yan Lianke

Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This is China's first long novel depicting the theme of AIDS, a work comparable to world-class classics like Camus's The Plague and Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year in portraying the spread of infectious diseases. Set against the backdrop of AIDS outbreaks in Central China, the novel vividly portrays the actions of a group of farmers suddenly thrown into a situation of AIDS spread and countless deaths, fully revealing the diverse aspects of human nature in extreme circumstances. In terms of writing style, the novel combines realistic documentary descriptions with surreal and astonishing dreamlike imagination, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, both shocking and thought-provoking. This blood-and-tears work has been published successively in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan for its cold, stark portrayal of the soulful dance of AIDS-ridden villages. When depicting the ignorance, stubbornness, and tragedy of the farmers, the author remains stern and relentless, as seen in The Flowing Years and Shouhuo, and now in The Dream of Ding Village: the novel blends realistic documentary descriptions with surreal and astonishing dreamlike imagination, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, both shocking and deeply reflective. In this blood-soaked work, the author pushes his sharp critique to the extreme while also expressing his sincere humanitarian concern and selfless love for the future of humanity. AIDS is today's most threatening infectious disease to humanity. Paying attention to the AIDS issue and the survival environment and fate of human beings is the theme of this work and also the harsh reality we cannot avoid today. To write and publish this novel, the author and Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House donated funds and jointly launched the "Care for Life, Focus on AIDS Charity Action," which continues to this day.
