Publishing Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This is a beginner's English dictionary suitable for children and adolescents, designed for easy lookup and memorization of English words. The dictionary was specifically introduced from the Taiwan-based company Shiyi Cultural Enterprise Co., Ltd. and revised according to the primary school English curriculum standards set by the National Ministry of Education and the current primary school English textbooks. The entire dictionary includes over 1,800 frequently used words from primary school English textbooks and general English learning. The major feature of this dictionary is the inclusion of numerous vivid and colorful situational illustrations throughout, which can greatly stimulate children's interest in learning English. Additionally, compared to other similar publications, this dictionary has the following outstanding features:
1. Words are categorized into four levels based on their importance and usage frequency: three-star, two-star, one-star, and no-star, with stars marked before each word.
2. Word forms are annotated according to grammatical changes (the changed parts are highlighted in red), such as plural forms of nouns, comparative forms of adjectives and adverbs (including both comparative and superlative forms), and changes in verb person and tense (third-person singular form, present tense, past tense, past participle, present participle).
3. For some important words, depending on their grammatical function, cute icons are used to introduce synonyms, antonyms, etymology, phrases, proverbs, and various important notes.
4. Some common nouns are organized into categories, with names of fruits and animals, for example, listed under the terms "fruit" () and "animal" (), making learning and memorization very convenient.
5. The example sentences included in the dictionary are highly practical, everyday, and colloquial, allowing readers to quickly improve their ability to use words in sentences.
6. The dictionary also includes the writing and pronunciation of months, days of the week, time, dates, phone numbers, and a table of numbers.
The chief editor, Richard David Croos, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States and has held positions such as a translator for the U.S. government's joint publications research service, a TOEIC and TOEFL examiner, and an English listening teacher, with extensive experience in English teaching. Due to certain differences in language habits between mainland China and Taiwan, the original book underwent numerous revisions during the editing process to better align with mainland Chinese language conventions. Due to the rushed editing and publishing schedule, there may be many imperfections. We sincerely request that readers provide timely feedback so that these issues can be corrected and improved in future editions.
