A Sociologist of Sexuality Reveals His Real Investigation: Professor Pan Suiming from Renmin University of China conducted "residential-style" research in underground "red-light districts," recording the stories of 41 "prostitutes," "pimps," and "bosses" through interview transcripts, and further exploring the current state of China's "sex industry" and more social issues. In 1997, Professor Pan Suiming immersed himself in the underground "red-light districts" of B Town in the Pearl River Delta, an industrial development zone adjacent to a central Chinese city, and a small gold mine in a private mining area at the border of Hunan and Guizhou. He conducted community research in these three locations and wrote the book "Existence and Absurdity—An Examination of China's Underground 'Sex Industry.'" In the following year of 1998, he visited B Town and its affiliated S District three times, conducting a total of 46 days of "residential-style" tracking research in the underground "red-light districts" there. This book is a summary of these three community surveys and a sequel to "Existence and Absurdity." In this book, Professor Pan continues to adopt the perspective and research approach of "Existence and Absurdity," primarily focusing on the developmental trajectory, causes, operational mechanisms, and relationship with the social environment of the "red-light districts." At the same time, he pays greater attention to collecting as many case studies as possible and gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse individuals involved in or connected to the "sex industry," using their life experiences to explain more profound or specific issues. In the latter half of the book, Professor Pan records individual cases of 41 "prostitutes," "pimps," and "bosses" through interview transcripts. If you are not interested in the "abstract," you can focus solely on these 41 cases, as their personal situations and life experiences may offer more insights than theoretical analysis.
