Features: With the development of China's water conservancy industry, research on sediment, especially the fundamental theoretical research on sediment, has made significant progress. Entering the new century, facing new water management concepts, particularly as issues like maintaining river health and restoring river ecology are gaining widespread attention, sediment research is confronted with new opportunities and challenges. River processes and river health have become major scientific questions that sediment research needs to address. Numerous researchers, managers, and educators in the field of sediment and related disciplines have achieved numerous research results in river processes and river health. To further promote the progress of sediment research in China and provide important scientific and technological support for the development of China's water conservancy and hydropower industry as well as sustainable economic and social development, the Sediment Research Committee of the China Society of Water Conservancy held the "6th National Academic Symposium on Fundamental Theoretical Research of Sediment" in Zhengzhou, Henan, in November 2005. This symposium was a grand gathering for researchers and professionals in the field of sediment and related disciplines. A total of about 300 papers were received for this symposium, of which 232 were published in the book "Proceedings of the 6th National Academic Symposium on Fundamental Theoretical Research of Sediment." These papers fully reflect the remarkable achievements of China's sediment researchers in recent years in areas such as soil erosion, reservoir sedimentation, channel evolution and river regulation, coastal sediment transport, debris flow disaster prevention, sediment treatment and utilization, river simulation technology, and sediment measurement technology.
