Features: China is a nation of poetry and literature. Ancient Chinese poetry and prose to a certain extent represent the spirit of ancient Chinese civilization and are worthy of our careful appreciation and savoring. To facilitate the popularization and collection of poetry and prose, scholars and gentlemen have been engaged in the selection and compilation of works since ancient times. Each era has produced outstanding selections that have benefited the world and have been passed down through the ages. The ancient poetry and prose anthologies compiled by our ancestors have preserved many masterpieces and have provided us with evidence of the aesthetic tastes of their time. In the process of selecting, categorizing, commenting, and copying and printing, the ancients objectively revealed their deep understanding and aesthetic standards of poetry and prose to us, opening a channel for us to trace the evolution of ancient literary perspectives.
Publishing the series "Classics of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Prose Anthologies" has been a long-standing plan for us. We are fully aware of our limited capabilities, but it is our bounden duty to present ideal books to our readers. In compiling this series, we have focused on four aspects: selectivity, comprehensiveness, annotations, and design.
Selectivity refers to the careful selection of the most outstanding ancient poetry and prose anthologies for publication. We not only emphasize the authority of the compilers and their selection approaches but also the widespread circulation of the anthologies, ensuring they possess genuine collectible value.
Comprehensiveness means reflecting the essence of ancient poetry and prose anthologies as fully as possible, without the titles or content of the selected works.
Annotations include brief introductions to the authors, necessary explanations of some titles, and pinyin annotations for difficult characters, as well as definitions of obscure terms and allusions. We trust the readers' appreciation, so we neither provide prefaces nor append colloquial translations.
Design aims to achieve aesthetic and elegant packaging, making the books suitable for both personal reading and gifting to friends and family.
Since the beginning of 1998, when we first introduced 17 anthologies, they have been well-received by readers. Many have sent letters to commend our work and offered constructive suggestions, which has greatly encouraged us. The suggestions raised by readers have been incorporated into the revised edition, and here, we express our heartfelt gratitude to them. At the request of many readers, we are now releasing the second batch of 5 anthologies in "Classics of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Prose." The annotators we have hired remain classical literature experts from institutions such as Beijing Normal University and Peking University.
How effective our work is still depends on your judgment. We sincerely look forward to your support.
This book selects 412 Tang Dynasty poems, all in quatrains. The author provides detailed explanations for each poem, making them easy to understand and enjoyable to read. They will enrich your literary knowledge.
