Xu Beihong was one of China's greatest modern artists and art educators. Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was born in Yixing, Jiangsu, into a poor rural family of painter-artisans. In his youth, he learned painting from his father. In 1918, he accepted a position as a mentor at the Peking University Painting Method Research Society, invited by. The following year, he went to Paris for studies, later transferring to Berlin and Belgium to study drawing and oil painting. Upon returning to China in 1927, he successively served as the president of the Peking Art Academy, the head of the Art Department at Nanjing Central University, and the president of the Peking Art College after the War of Resistance Against Japan. After the liberation, he became the president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the chairman of the All-China Association of Art Workers until his death.
