Features: This book primarily traces the history of the Great Song Dynasty through the lens of a "mystery." Court secrets, anecdotes of renowned officials, military campaigns, cases of officials' imprisonment, literary and artistic achievements, tragic tales of beautiful women, social customs, and turbulent society—these are the historical secrets the book seeks to reveal. Regardless of which aspect interests you, as soon as you open this book, these historical secrets will no longer remain mysteries. The cultural tradition of recording history in ancient China became even more pronounced during the Song Dynasty. First, the government placed great emphasis on the compilation of contemporary history. The historical archives were highly organized, and the system for compiling history was well-established. Works such as the Record of Court Activities, Chronicles of Current Affairs, Daily Annals, Veritable Records, National History, and Collected Treatises were numerous, with vast volumes. Second, among the scholar-officials, the practice of privately compiling and writing contemporary history became fashionable. Several important historical works that survive to this day, such as the Continuation of the Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government, Annals of the Eastern Capital, and Annals of the Reign of Jianyan were privately compiled. Additionally, the writings of scholar-officials preserved a wealth of contemporary historical records. Coupled with the widespread adoption of woodblock printing and the invention of movable-type printing, many large-scale books began to be printed and published. Despite the devastation of many historical records during the wars between the Song and Jin, the Song and Yuan, and the Yuan and Ming dynasties, overall, the amount of historical material preserved during the Song Dynasty far exceeded that of previous eras. This rich historical material provided a solid foundation for later generations to study the Great Song Dynasty. However, do not assume that these historical records can accurately reflect the truth of history. Determining the authenticity and value of historical sources is an extremely complex issue. First, it is essential to understand that any historical source is created by a specific individual, and everyone has limitations in their perspective. As a result, some records may inevitably contain inaccuracies. If multiple sources and different perspectives on the same event are not considered, it is highly likely that misinterpretations of history may occur. Conversely, if multiple sources and different interpretations of the same event exist, it often leads to a series of disagreements and questions, even giving rise to historical mysteries. How to solve these doubts and challenges is a reality that all historians and enthusiasts must confront. Therefore, those who study history should not blindly trust books but must strive to dispel the in historical records to gradually approach the truth of history.
